At MEDICOFIT clinic, we provide physiotherapy for women as an independent pillar of physiotherapy, as it is a specialised field that physiotherapists are too rarely aware of. Many chronic and acute diseases of the female musculoskeletal system are associated with pregnancy, vaginal delivery, menopause, and other specific risk factors that affect women.
For example, the female body has an anatomical predisposition for developing pathologies of the SI joint (sacroiliac joint) and the tailbone (coccyx). Coccydynia (coccyalgia) is an inflamed and painful condition of the tailbone that occurs 5 times more often in women than in men.
During pregnancy and postpartum period, women often experience pelvic ring pain, diastasis recti, and urinary incontinence. Physiotherapy must also be specially tailored to caesarean section and in the case of groin hernia surgery. Women often have scars after giving birth, which we treat at MEDICOFIT clinic along with loose pelvic floor muscles in the physiotherapy department for pregnant women.
Did you know that 50% of all chronic and degenerative conditions have a higher prevalence in women, while only 20% of all chronic and degenerative conditions have a higher prevalence in men? In the age group between 36 and 59 years, the overall prevalence of back pain is 28.8% in men and 60.9% in women, mainly due to menopause, as four quarters of all women at this age experience low back and spine pain.
