More about sports massage
Sports massage is specialised for recreational and top athletes. In sports massage, we focus on tissues that are specifically loaded during the sports activity the massaged person is engaged in.
At MEDICOFIT clinic, we take a diagnostic approach to sports massage, as we believe that a precise analysis of muscle structure is key before manual sports massage techniques can be performed.
Sports massage is primarily administered as a means of accelerating local regeneration of stressed muscle groups and as a means of prevention, as excessively toned and shortened muscle groups pose a risk of traumatic injury, such as a strained or torn muscle. One of the main goals of sports massage is to use manual techniques to ensure maximum function of the musculoskeletal system.
How is sports massage done and what are its effects?
Sports massage improves blood and lymphatic circulation, which means that we increase the metabolic activity of the muscle at rest and stimulate physiological regeneration processes.
An important segment of the application of sports massage is also the healing of microinjuries that occur with increased physical load. Sports massage has a therapeutic effect on the microinjuries caused, meaning that it accelerates healing and reduces the body’s inflammatory response to the injury.
For a successful sports massage, prior clinical testing by a physiotherapist and manual testing of the function of muscle groups are required. Sports massage must be aimed at improving the specific function of the massaged person. Sports massage must be individually focused on the specifics of the sport and the body type of the massaged person.
Sports massage can also be performed as part of preparation for competitions, where the goal is to raise internal muscle temperature and improve the physiological activity of the muscle before the exertion, thereby improving the athlete’s ability to execute sports movements better technically and reducing the likelihood of injuries.
At MEDICOFIT clinic, we use sports massage in combination with our modern regeneration lodge, meaning that we also provide the athlete with HiToP high-tone electrotherapy and pressotherapy (mechanical lymphatic drainage) after the sports massage.
